Across Africa, women are dying of cancers that are preventable and curable — but there are ways we can help change this.
A woman in rural Eswatini can carry precancerous cells in her cervix for a decade before they become cancer. Ten years of warning. A twenty-minute procedure would end the threat. Without screening, she never knows, and she dies leaving behind children who needed her.
A Christian sister in southeastern Nigeria finds a lump and waits — for money, for a referral, for someone to tell her what to do next. By the time she reaches a hospital, a treatable cancer has become a terminal one.
We believe every one of these women bears the image of God. We believe her life is worth the cost of finding her early. And this is why we are asking for your help.
Breast Cancer Care in Nigeria
Nigerian Christian Hospital has served southeastern Nigeria for more than sixty years. For over twenty of those years, we have walked with women through breast cancer — examination, biopsy, surgery, chemotherapy, combined with Christian love and encouragement.
The need is outgrowing us. At our peak we have served 12 patients monthly, but by expanding our specialized staffing and upgrading our facilities and equipment, we anticipate tripling this in the next year!
Cervical Cancer Care in Eswatini
Eswatini faces the highest cervical cancer rates in the world. Dr. Bob Whittaker and our team at the Mathengeni Church of Christ Clinic screen women using VIA and HPV testing, and when we find precancerous tissue, we treat it that same day with a LEEP — a short outpatient procedure that removes the abnormal cells before cancer can ever take hold.
